An ambitious interdisciplinary research program

The Priority Research and Equipment Program (PEPR) FORESTT is an ambitious interdisciplinary research program focused on the socio-ecological transition of forest systems in temperate, Mediterranean, and tropical regions. It is positioned upstream of the many supports provided by France 2030 to the forest-wood sector along the research-education-development-innovation continuum. It also aims to foster synergies between the academic world and the socio-economic sector to address the issue of adaptation and resilience of forest socio-ecosystems to global changes.

Its objectives are to:

  1. Unite, structure, and sustain integrated research supporting the changes in forest socio-ecosystems;
  2. Promote systemic approaches, interdisciplinarity, and co-construction with stakeholders;
  3. Strengthen initial and continuous training capacities;
  4. Propose and experimente innovative pathways for adaptive management, restoration, and conservation of forests.

The program is structured around 3 pilars :

5 focal projects

REGE-ADAPT, X-RISKS, MONITOR, FORESTT-HUB and NUM-DATA, launched in Sept. 2024 for 6 years

Project management and governance

Coordination and scientific animation, communication, support to mobility and innovation

10 to 15 additional research projects

which will be selected through the call for projects opened by the ANR from Oct. 22 to Jan. 30, 2025

Address the major challenges of the transition of forest socio-ecosystems

FORESTT promotes high-quality interdisciplinary science, driven by the scientific excellence of the research communities involved; supports responsible science that is attentive to major environmental, socio-economic, and political challenges related to forest adaptation; encourages engaged science capable of transforming the actions of stakeholders and providing recommendations for public policy decisions; and fosters open science with, and not alongside, stakeholders in the forest-wood sector, thus promoting the exchange of knowledge.

The program also establishes structures that facilitate innovation, open and co-constructed, around societal issues related to forest management and planning (Living Labs network). Thus, FORESTT contributes to the objectives of national low-carbon strategies and biodiversity, the forest roadmap for ecological planning, and will support the implementation of the new European Forest Strategy and the national strategy to combat imported deforestation. FORESTT also aims to provide operational tools for consultation, negotiation, and decision support for biodiversity conservation and the maintenance of healthy forest ecosystems, as well as support for the development of a bioeconomy with high social, economic, and environmental value.

FORESTT capitalizes on the dynamism and diversity of the French scientific community, its international integration, and the strengths of its research facilities both in mainland France and overseas, including in tropical regions. The program aims to elevate France’s scientific leadership to the highest international level on this strategic topic and to contribute to expertise and support for national, European, and international public policies through its openness to stakeholders and the deployment of knowledge transfer actions.
